SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEMS
The energy it takes to maintain the water system in a building is yet another thing that building owners rarely think about until the bills arrive. But this is an excellent energy-saving opportunity.
Heating, storing and keeping water hot is one of the more expensive and energy-consuming tasks in a home or commercial building. Adding a solar water heater to an existing water-heating system can reduce energy bills and CO2 emissions by up to 50 percent depending on the climate and how many sunny days you have in your area. Or, you may want to consider an on-demand tankless system.
SOLAR WATER HEATING SYSTEMS
Very generally speaking, most solar water systems utilize a collector and a storage tank. After being heated by the collector, the water is run through a coil of copper piping inside the water tank, transferring its heat to the water.
Once the water’s heat has been discharged into the water, the now cooled water gets pumped back up to the solar collector on the roof for reheating. Some systems do this passively and others use powered equipment to help move the water.
ON-DEMAND WATER HEATING SYSTEMS
An on-demand, or tankless, hot water system is exactly what it sounds like. No hot water is stored, it is created when the hot water faucet is turned on.
These are great energy-saving units for smaller commercial buildings and are quite affordable. They can be powered by a gas burner or electricity. If electric, the energy can be created by using solar panels. They are easy and economical to maintain and have a long lifetime — usually 20 years.
